Search Elkhart County Court Dockets

County court or city court? That question makes an Elkhart County search faster, more accurate, and easier to confirm, because city matters may follow a separate clerk route. Begin with the public state search for Elkhart County, Indiana to read the running record of filings, orders, settings, and outcomes, then use the court calendar when the goal is a hearing date. The clerk of the trial court in Goshen keeps the official record. Copies from that office replace nothing online, and an Elkhart County court docket search ends there when proof is required.

Elkhart County MyCase Search Fields

Each search field on the portal does its own job. Don't stuff a citation number into the case-number box. And don't stack several identifiers into one search. Punctuation and leading zeros can often be left out. The sounds-like option helps with tricky spellings, though it won't combine with a wildcard.

PathUseful fieldsBest use
CaseCase, citation, cross-reference numberKnown identifier
NameLast, first, middle, birth dateKnown party
AttorneyName or attorney numberCounsel-linked cases
FiltersCourt, status, file datesNarrowing results

Searches that would return more than 1,000 results come back empty, so clear a wrong optional filter before assuming a case doesn't exist. If the docket still won't appear, call the clerk's office.

Inside an Elkhart County Court Docket

Indiana's official running record of trial-court events is the Chronological Case Summary, or CCS. It lists case identity, assignment, parties, settings, filings, orders, and disposition. One caution: an entry date can mark when the clerk logged an event rather than when the event actually happened. Read each line's text alongside its linked order.

Case numberA uniform identifier such as 20D04-2608-CM-00000, with county, court, date, type, and sequence parts.
PartiesPeople, agencies, or businesses and their roles.
EntriesThe dated sequence of filings, notices, and orders.
SettingsEvent type, date, court, and judicial officer when public.
AssignmentThe assigned Elkhart County court and judicial officer.
DispositionThe recorded outcome, subject to later entries.

An old converted case may show a CCS line with no document image attached, and the line still counts. For anything formal, get a certified copy from the Clerk.

Courts That Keep Dockets in Elkhart County

Elkhart County runs one Circuit Court and six Superior Courts. Local rules divide the casework among them. Elkhart, Goshen, and Nappanee each keep a city court too. Pick the wrong court node in a search. The right case may stay buried in unrelated results.

Elkhart County Odyssey Timeline

Odyssey arrived at the county Circuit and Superior Courts on September 4, 2012. Nappanee City Court joined July 1, 2013, Goshen on June 29, 2017, and Elkhart City Court on November 2, 2020. Those dates explain why older cases show converted events and patchy document history. Joining Odyssey never meant every earlier paper filing got scanned.

Indiana e-file feeds documents straight into the statewide Odyssey environment, which builds and maintains the CCS along with financial data and statistics. Attorneys file there. The public reads non-confidential material through MyCase. A party holding an access code can see more available documents by signing in with an Indiana Courts account.

Watch for transfers. When one changes the court assignment or the case number, search the old reference and the new one. Compare the county and court code at the head of each result. That small check separates a city-court event from a later county proceeding and keeps two look-alike party names from blurring together.

How to Find Court Dates and Settings

Indiana Trial Court Calendars makes the first move easy. You pick Elkhart County, a participating court, a date, and optional case text. The public window spans seven days back and four weeks ahead. County choices currently cover Circuit Court and Superior Courts 1 through 6. A result may list the date, the time, and the time zone. It may also show the court, description, judicial officer, and a case link.

City courts are absent from the current Elkhart selector. Confirm a city-court setting with that court's clerk and the citation. An empty calendar doesn't mean the hearing was canceled. Participation, publication choices, restrictions, or the date window can each produce no result. For more on settings and resets, see the Elkhart County court dates page.

Elkhart County Calendar Blind Spots

A label on the calendar names the session, never its result. "Sentencing Hearing" tells you no sentence. "Jury Trial" is not a verdict. Under Local Rule 103.2, each regularly presiding judicial officer keeps a separate calendar, and a daily public hearing calendar runs except for restricted matters.

When a date looks wrong: Compare the newest CCS entries for a motion, order, and reset, then call the assigned court or clerk before relying on an older date.

A continuance can leave the old setting sitting on the calendar. Local Rule 210 ordinarily requires a verified request at least seven days before the setting unless the reason arose later. The court's order, not the bare request, controls.

Public Access to Court Dockets

Indiana presumes openness, but access has limits. A case, document, or field can be excluded, redacted, sealed, or opened only to an authorized person. MyCase is not a complete index of every Elkhart County proceeding.

Key Rules:

Indiana Court Record Rule 4 states general access unless an exclusion, seal, or other law controls.

Rule 5 identifies confidential, excluded, and redacted material.

Rules 9 and 10 address authorized access and added exclusions.

Indiana Access to Public Records Act governs agency requests alongside court rules.

Protection orders travel a separate route. Juvenile, mental-health, family, sealed, and expunged material may be missing or partly hidden. Say "not found in public search" rather than "no record exists."

Elkhart County Request Channels

MyCase covers the case itself. CourtCal shows dates for participating courts. For the official Elkhart County record, though, go to the clerk. Call 574-538-3000 or come to the counter when you need a certified copy. The same goes for an older file, a full payment ledger, archive help, or a public document that is not online. If you mail a request, spell out the case, court, document, date range, format, and whether you need certification. The clerk can tell you if an electronic copy exists. The clerk can also say what fee applies and how payment works. Note that the county's general public-record request form is administrative; the court Clerk does not require it.

Timing rules come from the Public Access Counselor. An in-person or phone request should get an acknowledgement within 24 hours. A mailed, emailed, or faxed one gets seven calendar days. Those clocks cover acknowledgement only, not delivery. Production is due within a reasonable time. A big Elkhart County request can run long. Staff must find the court records, check access limits, and make lawful redactions. A written denial should cite its rule or statutory basis. City records belong with the city clerk. An appellate record goes to the appellate Clerk, and a federal record to the federal clerk.

Docket Records at the Clerk's Office

Elkhart County's court docket records live with the elected County Clerk. The clerk also keeps the court's seal. Day to day, the office handles filings, fines, fees, costs, copies, and the official ledger for every case. Patricia A. Pickens holds the Clerk's post on the current department page. Older official pages still name a prior officeholder. When the name matters to your request, confirm it before you rely on it.

Elkhart County Copy Fees

Baseline figures come from State Board of Accounts material. Ask the Clerk for a current quote. Exhibits, transcripts, recordings, archive searches, and electronic delivery can each carry a different charge. Filing fees are not copy charges. A narrow request usually gets a clearer estimate than asking for the whole court file. Give the case number. Include the exact CCS entry or order, your preferred form, and how you want it delivered. Before paying for certification, ask whether a plain copy will do.

State trial-fee totals cover filing and service, not the cost of pulling an existing docket. Local assignments add useful context to a records request. Superior Court 2 serves as an Indiana Commercial Court for eligible disputes. Superior Court 6 houses the Unified Family Court. Superior Court 4 connects to the Traffic and Misdemeanor Division. It also has a certified Problem-Solving Drug Court, which runs a Monday afternoon phase schedule. Even so, each program setting belongs in its own CCS entry and assigned court. Program staff, the Prosecutor, Court Services, and the BMV each keep separate records. None of them stands in for the Clerk's official Elkhart County court record.

Federal Dockets Near Elkhart County

Federal cases never show up in MyCase. For Elkhart County, the federal forum is the South Bend Division of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. District and bankruptcy dockets live in PACER and CM/ECF. The federal clerk issues official copies. The South Bend Division page lists the Indiana counties, Elkhart among them, that the division serves.

That split keeps a federal docket search outside the county CCS system. Appeals split too: federal appeals go to the Seventh Circuit, while state appeals ordinarily land in the Indiana Court of Appeals.

Elkhart County Court Dockets by City

The five largest incorporated places take different routes. Elkhart, Goshen, and Nappanee each have a city court with its own clerk contact. Middlebury and Wakarusa have no standalone Odyssey court node in current directories. So start with the issuing agency and the summons before searching any county case that gets filed. A citation written in a city can still reach the county Traffic and Misdemeanor Division later, sometimes through a trial de novo. That term just means a fresh trial in county court. It is not a review of the city record.

Middlebury Docket Search

3,466 residents · No city node; follow the filing court.

Wakarusa Docket Search

These are official 2020 Census counts, not caseload totals. A bigger population does not mean a heavier city court docket. What matters is the court named on the citation or in CCS. If the ticket came from Middlebury or Wakarusa, write down the issuing agency, the ordinance number, the citation number, and the filing location before you call. With those details, town staff or the county Clerk can route the question instead of guessing at a municipal court that the official list does not show.

Map and Directions to the Elkhart County Judicial Center

Elkhart Circuit Court, Superior Courts 1 through 6, and the office of the County Clerk are together at the consolidated Judicial Center, 1905 Reliance Road, in Goshen. The 173,000-square-foot building sits on a 32-acre site and was built with a June 2024 construction target, replacing the older courthouse arrangement. Probation is on the third floor and the Public Defender on the fourth; the Clerk's counter is the record-keeper for the CCS across every county trial court housed there.
